Why should you have your Fire Alarm serviced?
The Fire Precautions Act. The Fire Precautions (Work Place) Regulations and many other pieces of Fire, Safety and Building
legislation govern the servicing of Fire Alarm systems. Some say it outright and others only imply it. Some legislation carries
with it heavy penalties.
Whether you believe you are obliged or not, you have a lot of capital invested in your Fire Alarm system. This would be
wasted money if it didn't work. When you need the Fire Alarm system to work it will be able to save someone's life, your
property or your business, so it must work properly. The only way you can be confident that it will work is if a professional
company using properly trained and qualified engineers regularly services it. BS5839 requires Fire Alarm systems to be
serviced at least 4 times per year.

Fire Alarm Maintenance
Have you fulfilled your statutory obligations under the Fire Precautions Act 1971?
The Act requires that the following tests be carried out:
- Daily
- Visual inspections of the fire alarm panel to ensure no faults are apparent.
- Weekly
- At an appointed time/day each week a fire alarm Manual Call Point (MCP) should be tested. The MCP's should
be labelled and the weekly test rotated to ensure that all MCP's are tested.
- (a) A visual inspection of all the standby batteries should be made.
- (b) A visual inspection of all MCP's, heat detectors etc. to ensure they are free from obstruction and not damaged.
- Quarterly
- A qualified person must carry out a service of the fire alarm system.
- Annually
- Full system service by a qualified person.
It is important that you maintain the correct documentation regarding the above tests.
